Science and Mormonism 2 Program Synopsis December 24, 2006
Van: I briefly reviewed last week's program
and then presented some of the notes I had prepared.
See my notes.
Callers: Following are topics raised by the
callers. I commented on most of these points.
1. He said Joseph Smith and Brigham Young believed the moon is inhabited and that
scientists are now coming to believe this. He argued that scientists only believe, or state, that which they are paid to.
He believes there is a conspiracy to keep the true facts discovered by science secret.

2. Tower of Babel: should we interpret God's displeasure at the building of the
tower as an indication that He is not pleased with modern ventures into space? Is this an ancient story or a historical account.
3. He expressed his respect for science and considers science and religion to
be on the same page on the Tower of Babel. Linguists believe the many languages come from a single language. He referred to
the book of Jasher on the Tower story which places the beginning of fire kiln brick, which is much stronger, at the site of
the Tower.
4. Art Bulla called to tell me that he knows that everything I teach is false
and proceeded to continue his ongoing tirade against science.
5. He disagrees with me in his calls, but does not think Art's show of disrespect
is appropriate. I appreciate his sentiment, but I have been doing my talk show for 26 years and I am not sensitive to personal
attacks. He asked about my view on the Garden of Eden having been in Missouri.
6. He asked for my opinion of a local TV program by an ex-Mormon who claims to
be a born-again Christian.
Emails: I responded to these two emails
1. If the plates, urim & thummim, Liahona, and sword of Laban were not
real artifacts associated with real Book of Mormon events, what was their source? Did God gather a bunch of artifacts from
various civilizations and simply put them together in New York in order to give Joseph Smith all the the "props" he needed
to create a convincing story?
2. I have heard you discount various biblical accounts because they don't fit the present understanding of science. I am
curious if this includes such things as Jesus' turning water into wine, raising the dead, healing the sick, walking on water,
and so forth.
Also, I have twice heard you use the example that what the majority of scientists believe about a subject
establishes the fact. I understand your logic, but, at the same time, if a thousand people were lined up and asked if Mormonism
was true, I dare say that most would answer in the negative. Is this proof that Mormonism is false?
